Year of The Dog

The Asian Pacific Islander Queer Women and Transgender Community celebrated their Lunar New Year Banquet and 31st Year Celebration (APIQWTC) in Oakland’s China Town at the Cinnammon Tree Restaurant and Banquet Hall. The annual fundraiser took place on April 21, and had as a goal to fund to scholarships and projects that support the LGBTQ API visibility - including the SF Pride Parade.

After the dinner and some community performances, the student scholarships were announced as well as the banquet beneficiary (ASPIRE this year). Cecilia Chung received the Phoenix Award, and City of Richmond Council Member Jovanka Beckles was one of the guest speakers.

An organization entirely run by volunteers, APIQWTC is a fun, welcoming, multi-generational group of Asian & Pacific islander queer women and transgender people in the Bay Area. They are the legacy of queer A&PI activism, stemming from earlier-founded organizations going back to 1987. RRP board member Nicole Valentino was in attendance and mentioned how APIQWTC "is a wonderful organization that supports api queer women and trans folks in the Bay Area."
